Trying to stop being lazy with solo "music" stuff.
Results of the first bout of creativity, turned out a bit more "Ant-Zen"y than I was going for, but a OK start ...

Not really spamming it yet, but thought I'd blog it for people who might be interested!

Does anyone have an old turntable that does 78rpm they'd be willing to donate/swap for beer? The sound doesn't have to work, as long as it can spin at 78rpm.

For a "secret" project ...

11:51 am - Apropos of nothing

Been having a nostalgia spree of listening to older Autechre recently, still sounds sooooo fresh.
Here's one of my all-time favourite tracks, the sweeping synth gets me every time, untouchable ...

Haven't really been updating, doing well. Had a much-needed week off work, mostly been playing too much Go, reading, catching up on sleep and generally de-stressing.

Oh, anyone's who's interested, Skullflower are playing Cut Hands tonight at Henry's, doors 7pm. Should be good :-)

Back from Barcelona!
My brain's melting slightly, but some random thoughts:
The City - Barcelona is a wonderful city! Not sure I'd like to to live there - as someone said, it's like Edinburgh in festival season all year round! The main draw is the Gaudi stuff - the Sagrada Familia is something else. It is a very lively city, was really glad there were a couple of days each side of the festival to explore! It's also a bit dodgy in places, we accidently wandered into a rather stabby looking area at one point, and we were constantly being offered drugs and the attentions of ladies of the night. We did find a couple of fantastic off-the-tourist-trail pubs though. The weather was probably a bit crap for Barcelona, but still superior to a Scottish summer, which suited me perfectly (as part penguin, I don't do hot and sunny very well ...)! There was also lots of good restaurants, we even found an awesome vegan place for Donna :-)
The festival
So many bands! Was slightly overwhelmed, we ended up constantly running from the end of one band to catch another. Random highlights in the order we saw them:
Matt Elliot - aka Third Eye Foundation, played a really varied set based around loops and Spanish guitar, he threw in a huge drum and bass loop right at the end to confuse anyone who hadn't heard TEF.
The Notwist - one of the draws of the festival for me, were awesome to see live, playing mostly stuff from Neon Golden and the new album.
Public Enemy - exactly as you'd imagine them, really fun with lots of energy, celebrating 20 years since the release of "it takes a nation of millions ...", they played almost the entire album. There was a nice surprise in the form of their very own warm-up band "Bomb Squad" doing a kicking dubstep set.
Six Organs of Admittance played a storming set, with Alex Neilson of Directing Hand on drums. Very varied stuff from their last few albums.
A Place to Bury Strangers were awesome - probably the loudest band of the festival, playing a wall-of-noise set of their catchy noise-pop.
Sebadoh played a great set, although they looked out of place on a big stage.
We caught Man Man playing at the mysp**e tent, and were really impressed with their Bonzo Dog Doodah Band-esque silliness, unfortunately we only managed to watch a bit of their main set before we had to rush off for ...
DEVO - who were one of the bands of the festival for me, the set was brilliant, they had so much energy for men who must be in their 60s. Words can't do it justice! Are we not men?
I really enjoyed Fuck Buttons' music, although it was pretty dull visually.
Om played a fantastic set - exactly what you'd imagine, stoner-tastic! Unfortunately, they played at 3 in the morning, so it was hard to concentrate :-(
Bon Iver were fantastic - emotional, involving stuff. The sing-along with the audience was pretty cool.
I loved Scout Niblett - she has such a powerful voice, and an ear for a song.
Wish I'd caught more of Silver Jews, need to hear more of their stuff, quirky and deep.
Young Marble Giants were really good - they just seem such nice, humble people - I thought they were going to invite the entire audience back to theirs for a nice cup of tea!
Throbbing Gristle were, of course, the band I was all about - I got a bit fan-boyish, and had to queue 40 minutes early to get near the front (they played in the seated auditorium), and they didn't disappoint. Playing a fairly droney soundscapish set, which was extremely unsettling, although they finished with one of their "top 40 hit songs", Zyklon B Zombie. The sound system was incredible, the bass hit like a big hitty thing (you can tell I need sleep ...), and the tweeters were high in the auditorium, giving the impression that the shifting sounds were all around. Genesis looked "lovely" as ever, but seemed a bit subdued - no chat with the audience at all, understandable giving what he's been through the past year. Amusingly, they played an old Coum Transmissions film on the big screen behind them - I love the idea that some random Cat Power fans might have wandered in to witness the sound of the The Gristle played over genital mutilation videos ...
Les Savy Fav were one of the surprise highlights, since I didn't know anything about them - the lead singer really knew how to work a crowd, mostly from within it - utterly crazy, words don't really do them justice!
Finished on a total high with the Animal Collective, who were a joy to behold!

Not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow :-(

01:26 pm - Friday bad pun

For Dougie, as revenge for his "ZX Plectrum" joke ...

K! and the Gang gig was fantastic last night - Scrödinger's Beard played their least ramshackle set ever! Seemed to go down quite well - the S.H.I.E.L.D. guy was dancing - that must count as a celebrity endorsement ;-) Enjoyed the Plimpton's set, and K! and the Gang were hilarious as ever. I also particularly enjoyed the DJ playing a good selection of sweary comedy songs between bands ...

11:11 am

It's that time of year again, feeling downed by The Bad Hay Fever - helped my parents out at the 5-mile water station of the Edinburgh to North Berwick in the morning yesterday, then spent the rest of the day hiding from the pollen. Been getting in creative moods recently, playing my guitar a lot - mostly messing about with trying to find ridiculously neofolk chord sequences, and playing about with the Devil's Interval (Dougie and Niall will likely know why ...), as well as practicing theremin. Although it's very easy to make cool 1950s scifi space noises (especially through a tape delay ... mmmmmm), the theremin is a total bastard to play properly, I'm still mostly doing scales, trying to play some simple tunes and then saying "fuck it" and turning up the tape delay ...
Also really excited about the lineup for Primavera in a few weeks - there's so much stuff, I'm a bit overwhelmed, and scared of bad clashes. I felt a bit guilty of choosing it over WGT, but tbh there aren't that many bands in WGT I'm that excited about (and Throbbing Gristle trump Psychic TV anyway!) - most of the music I'm listening to these days isn't particularly "scene" anyway.
Been downloading a load of the bands playing Primavera (don't worry, I intend to pay money for all the ones I like!) - so far been impressed with My Brightest Diamond, White Marble Giants, Bon Iver, Voice of the Seven Woods, MV and EE with the Golden Road, Scout Niblett and Messer Chups; already looking forward to Throbbing Gristle, Portishead, The Notwist, Six Organs, Ellen Allien, A Place to Bury Strangers, The Tindersticks, Mi and L'au, Om, Why?, Fuck Buttons, Explosions in the Sky, Shellac, Animal Collective and would go to see Devo and Public Enemy just to say I'd seen them - if there are any cool bands you spot on the list that I missed, feel free to recommend!
To complete the circle, was excited, and then annoyed to find out that Messer Chups's theremin playing is by Lydia Kavina, but she's not touring with them :-( So here's a video of her:
